In 1929, the Institute of the Horse in Great Britain inaugurated a Junior Branch of their organization, known as "The Pony Club", for the purpose of interesting young people in riding and sport. The remarkable success of The Pony Club in Britain sparked interest for the establishment of clubs worldwide. In 1934, members of the Eglinton Hunt Club in Toronto, having heard about Pony Club from their military associates in Britain, brought Pony Club to Canada. Colonel Timmis, Brigadier McKee, and others, applied to Britain for permission to form the Eglinton Hunt Branch of Pony Club. Permission was granted and the first Pony Club in North America was launched. Canadian Pony Club is a volunteer-run, national, non-profit organization for young people, ages 6 to 21, who want to learn more about horses, riding, and horse care. For more information, have a look at the Canadian Pony Club website.

Grand River Pony Club (GRPC) is a branch located central to the Elora/Fergus area. GRPC was one of the original Western Ontario Region branches that began in 1971, and was a very active branch up until a three year break from 1999-2001. The branch was reactivated in the fall of 2001 and has since taken off with excellent participation and membership.
Grand River Pony Club members are encouraged to participate in all disciplines, and to encourage their fellow Pony Club members regardless of skill or level. We strive to promote teamwork and friendship, as well as parent participation (a key to a successful club), which has always been strong in GRPC.
